The Home Office has released statistics showing that hate crime has increased by almost 30% in the period 2016-17.

The Lead Bishop for Racial Justice for the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Rt Revd Paul McAleenan, responded:

“We cannot ignore the targeting of minority communities following terror attacks earlier this year or the significant rise in hate crime since the referendum campaign began.

“Hate crime does not only violate the human dignity of victims, but undermines the Common Good of our society as a whole.

“I urge Catholics throughout England and Wales to play an active role in opposing the abuse, dehumanisation and intolerance that is increasingly dominating public discourse and harming our communities.”
