There’s a slightly different feel to November’s At the Foot of the Cross podcast.
As well as being a month of remembrance and prayer for those who have died, both on our parish November lists and in the World Wars and other conflicts, it’s also a time when the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales gather at Hinsley Hall in the Diocese of Leeds for their autumn plenary meeting.
This podcast consists of four episcopal audio interventions giving a flavour of the Bishops’ meeting.
We start with a reflection from Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the President of the Bishops’ Conference, who celebrated his 80th birthday the day before travelling to Yorkshire.
The dignity and protection of human life was central to the bishops’ discussions during the week, particularly parliamentary moves to legalise assisted suicide and decriminalise abortion up to birth in some cases. The bishops issued a post-plenary statement and Archbishop John Sherrington, Lead Bishop for Life Issues and Archbishop of Liverpool gave an interview acknowledging that 2025 has seen an assault on the dignity of human life, but stressing that hope is not lost.
There’s an update on prisons and prison ministry from Bishop Richard Moth and our final piece comes from Bishop Stephen Wright who’s Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle and Chair of CAFOD – the Church’s agency for overseas aid and development. He recently visited the remote Rushinga District in north eastern Zimbabwe and shares his experiences with us.
To conclude we join our Biblical Apostolate Manager, Fleur Dorrell, who looks after the God Who Speaks project, to look at what Scripture says about death and dying.
Hope you enjoy November’s At the Foot of the Cross podcast and we’ll return in Advent for another update from the Secretariat of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
