Welcome to the first podcast of the re-launched At the Foot of the Cross series, bringing you the latest from the Secretariat of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

The first point of order is to offer an apology to our regular listeners. At the Foot of the Cross experienced a hiatus after the departure of the our former General Secretary Canon Christopher Thomas, who skillfully guided us through our monthly podcast.

Now we’re back with a new season and this is very much a month of mission with the celebration of Evangelii Gaudium Sunday on 21 September. It’s the day in the Church’s calendar when we pray for and support the domestic mission activities of the Church in our countries and, appropriately, our new regular studio guest is the Director of Mission for the Bishops’ Conference, Abbot Hugh Allan O.Praem.

As Abbot Hugh’s new to the podcast we get to know him a little better and find out more about his life and ministry. Then it’s on to a new Scripture slot in which we speak to Fleur Dorrell. Fleur heads up our Biblical Apostolate and, again as a new guest, we talk about this important work before we reflect on the month’s theme – the Season of Creation. Fleur explains that when animals feature in the Bible, they provide a particular function, a divine purpose. They are not random, accidental or there to pad out a story. She also highlights three of our saints who were helped by animals.

Finally, stepping into our regular ‘Bishop’ slot is Bishop David Oakley to talk about the mission of the Church in England and Wales, why the Church is attractive to young people, and how you can support Evangelii Gaudium Sunday.
