Cardinal Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference, has written to Pakistan’s High Commissioner in London to express his condolences and prayers after the Peshawar school massacre on 16 December that resulted in the deaths of 141 people, mostly children.

They were killed by Taliban militants who stormed the army-run school in Peshawar in the north-west of the country.

In the letter to His Excellency Syed lbne Abbas, the Cardinal wrote:

“I am writing to offer my sincere condolences to you, on the recent tragic loss of life of so many at the Peshawar School.

“This horrendous act has shocked the world and all who hold that respect for human life is an essential foundation for every society.

“I would like to assure you that the victims of this tragedy, their families and the wider society of Pakistan, are very much in my prayers.

“I assure you, too, of the prayers and condolences of the Catholic Community. We, too, mourn this loss of life.”
