Canonisation Events

As well as the Canonisation itself, there are a number of free-to-attend events in Rome - celebration concerts, a prayer vigil and an academic symposium.

Newman the Prophet: A Saint for our Times

The Thomistic Institute at the Angelicum University is holding a one-day symposium on Saturday, 12 October, titled ‘Newman the Prophet: A Saint for Our Times’. Speakers include Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham, Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney, George Weigel, Sr. Catherine Joseph Droste O.P., Fr. Guy Nicholls, Cong Orat, Prof. Tracey Rowland and Thomas Farr. Register here.

Vigil of Prayer and Celebratory Concert

On the eve of his canonisation, we will pray for the intercession of John Henry Newman. Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham will preside invoking the prayers of the new Saint-to-be for all those gathered in the church, and their intentions. Mrs Melissa Villalobos is attending. Maria experienced profuse bleeding during one of her pregnancies and was healed by the intercession of Cardinal Newman. This miracle was the final step in the cause for Newman’s elevation to sainthood. Register here.

The Canonisation of John Henry Newman

John Henry Newman will be made a saint by Pope Francis. Cardinal Newman is the first English person who has lived since the 17th century officially to be recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. Although registration is free over at, it only secures your ticket. You must collect your ticket in Rome in the days before the canonisation. Register here.

Musical Oratory

In the tradition of the Musical Oratory of St Philip Neri, which Newman brought to England when he founded the English Oratory. A service of spiritual readings, reflections and prayers from Saint John Henry, with music provided by the London Oratory Schola in the church where St Philip is buried. Register here.

Mass of Thanksgiving for Saint John Henry Newman

A Mass of Thanksgiving will take place on Monday, 14 October at the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano – also known as the Cathedral of the Most Holy Savior and of Saints John the Baptist and the Evangelist in the Lateran.

His Eminence Cardinal Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference, will preside. Newly-installed Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, Bishop Robert Byrne C.O., will preach at the Mass. Register now.
