Working in over 200 countries, Bible Society is a charity on a global mission to bring the Bible to life for every man, woman and child. We believe that when people engage with the Bible, lives can change for good. Bible Society is our Partner for The God who Speaks: The Year of the Word.
Across the world, millions of people are not engaging with the Bible. Often, this is because the Scriptures aren’t available or accessible, or because their significance and value haven’t yet been recognised. Working in over 200 countries, Bible Society is a charity and on a mission to offer the Bible to every man, woman and child. This is because we believe that when people engage with the Bible, lives can be changed, for good.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols is one of Bible Society’s Vice-Presidents and we are proud of our unique partnership. Together we nurture deeper Catholic engagement with the Scriptures, create great Catholic resources, and run a variety of initiatives across the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The God who Speaks: The Year of the Word is our latest and most exciting Scripture campaign to date.
More than 200 years ago, a 15-year-old Welsh girl, Mary Jones, thought the Bible was so important that she walked for 26 miles to buy a copy in her own language. That journey led to the founding of Bible Society with the help of people like William Wilberforce, Thomas Charles and Joseph Hughes, who asked: ‘If for Wales, why not for the kingdom? And if for the kingdom, why not for the world?
That question has driven us for more than two centuries. It’s why we’re established by Royal Charter and why The Queen is our patron. The Bible is a gift for the world today, not just yesterday. It is world-shaping literature. It tells the true human story centred on Jesus Christ. It’s revelation aids transformation and inspires life-giving encounters with God. So we work prayerfully, imaginatively, joyfully, boldly and skilfully to offer the Bible to the world.
Presenting the Bible today isn’t always straightforward. We can’t assume it’s obvious to everyone – even to every churchgoing Christian – that the Bible is helpful or true.
In this light –
Our mission is global and local. Globally, we’re called to work in:
In England and Wales, we’re called to:
God has given us the gift of the Bible. We want to see more people reading it, more people understanding it and more people changed by it.
