On the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of last Jain Tirthankara (teacher) of this age, Cardinal Tauran greets the Jain community and discusses the shared values of mercy and compassion in both religions, and goes on to describe how the Jain value of ahimsa, non-violence, can help to shape a more humane and compassionate world.

Mahavir Jayanti falls on 19 April this year, and Catholics are invited to share this message, which can be downloaded from the right hand corner of this page, with Jain individuals and organisations, as well as to pray for their Jain sister and brothers on or around this date – a suggestion for a bidding prayer and some more information, can be also found be found in the right hand corner of this page.
