The General Secretary of the Bishops’ Conference has written to the Cardinal Archbishop of Warsaw, His Eminience Kazimierz Nycz, to express sadness at the death of Cardinal Józef Glemp.

Cardinal Glemp, who lead the Catholic Church in Poland for more than three decades, died of lung cancer at the age of 83 on Wednesday, 23 January.

He served as Archbishop of Warsaw from 1981 to 2006 and Primate of Poland until 2009.

In the letter, Mgr Marcus Stock, describing Cardinal Glemp as ‘a beloved Bishop and son of Poland’, writes:

“His Eminence was well known for his efforts to help overcome the communist regime which had for so many years led to the oppression of human freedom in Poland. His leadership as a Bishop of the Catholic Church for over 28 years was exercised in a time of great challenges to the faith.”
