In a ceremony at the Guildhall on Wednesday, 1 May, the Catholic Bishop of the Forces, the Rt Rev Richard Moth, was granted the Freedom of the City of London.

Bishop Moth, who was admitted to the Freedom of the Skinners’ Company in February, said:

“The City Livery Companies are involved in a great deal of charitable work and have close links to the Armed Forces. It is an honour to receive the Freedom of the City and to be associated with the great historical traditions of the City of London.”

The first Freedom was believed to have been presented in 1237. Today it is largely a symbolic title, but it remains to be an important part of London history.
