The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has appointed the Most Rev Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales to the Holy See’s Congregation of Bishops (Congregatio pro Episcopis).

On being appointed, Archbishop Nichols said:

“It is a privilege to assist in the important task of appointing Bishops and I am honoured to have been asked to undertake this role by Pope Francis.

“I look forward to making whatever contribution I can to the work of the Apostolic See.”

Congregatio pro Episcopis

Established by Sixtus V in 1588, the Congregation for Bishops, as it’s now known, is the congregation of the Roman Curia which oversees the selection of new bishops.
