Retired Bishops of England and Wales

Many of our retired bishops play an active part in the life of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. The following bishops emeriti retain a department role for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.

Rt Rev Terence Brain

The Right Reverend Terence Brain is the Emeritus Bishop of Salford. Born in Coventry in 1938, Bishop Brain was ordained to the priesthood in February 1964. He was ordained bishop on 25 April 1991 serving as an auxiliary in Birmingham before being Installed Bishop of Salford on 7 October 1997.

The Right Reverend Christopher Budd is the Bishop Emeritus of Plymouth. Born in Romford, Essex, in 1937, Bishop Budd was ordained to the priesthood in July 1962. He was ordained bishop in Plymouth Cathedral on 15 January 1986.

The Right Reverend Mark Jabalé is the Bishop Emeritus of Menevia Born in Alessandria, Egypt, in 1933, Bishop Jabalé was ordained to the priesthood in July 1958. He was ordained bishop in St Joseph's Cathedral on 7 December 2000.

Vincent Malone was born in Liverpool on 11 September 1931. At the age of eighteen he went to St Joseph's College, Upholland to study for the priesthood and was ordained in his home parish of St Oswald, Old Swan on 18 September 1955.

The Right Reverend Patrick Leo McCartie is the Bishop Emeritus of Northampton Born in West Hartlepool, in 1925, Bishop McCartie was ordained to the priesthood in July 1949. He was ordained bishop in St Chad's Cathedral on 13 April 1977.
