Catholic dioceses in the Middle East are accommodating hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons. We support the UK’s work to help people in the region, as well as the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS) and Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme (VCRS) to resettle 23,000 people with particularly severe needs in the UK.

Catholic parishes are at the forefront of helping to implement VPRS through community sponsorship. We campaigned extensively for the scheme to be extended beyond Syrian nationals and strongly welcome the government’s recent decision to do so. This means that vulnerable refugees including members of the Yazidi community will no longer be arbitrarily excluded from resettlement on the basis of their nationality.
